Text Box: The Grievance Committee Officers are aware of several Grievances that have recently come to light, and the Committee is aggressively working with the Union Stewards to achieve the most positive conclusion. Furthermore, it is vitally important that we, the Union Stewards, Executive Committee Officers, Grievance Committee Officers and the USW Union Representatives continue to stay well informed with the Grievances that have arisen and any Grievances that should arise.
To our Brothers and Sisters, the members of Local 9511we would like you to know of our accomplishments and defeats thus far. Herein is a brief synopsis of the grievances filed to date. Note: The Grievance and Executive Committee Officers do not publish all Grievances due to the sensitivity and the nature of the Grievance.
Should you encounter or have encountered a similar situation, please notify the USW 9511 through the proper protocol.
Text Box: CIRCUMVENTING FULL TIME JOBS
The Union believes that the Employer is using part-time employees to circumvent the employment of full-time employees. A group Grievance was established in which several Brothers and Sisters are involved throughout the Province. The Union and the Employer had exhausted all steps of the Grievance Procedure. An Arbitration date was scheduled and took place on February 08th, 2008 in Ottawa, Ontario. USW Union Representatives and several Advisors presented the case on behalf of the Union. At present we have yet to receive the decision from the Arbitrator.
Text Box: REDUCING FULL-TIME HOURS TO SHARE WITH PART-TIMERS
The Employer reduced the hours of a full-time employee and equally distributed the working hours between one full-time staff and three or four part-time staff members. The Union believes that the Employer is in violation of the Collective Agreement. The Union has filed a Grievance, the full-time employee is currently working full-time hours and the grievance is currently progressing to Step 3.
Text Box: WORK FOR FREE
Two full-time employees were/are not being compensated for work that was required of them,
to fulfill the operational needs for their D.E.C. The USW Local 9511 was informed of this situation. The Union advised and assisted the two members in question in documenting the FACTS and in lodging an informal complaint. Unable to resolve the issue, a grievance was filed and is currently progressing to Step 3 of the Grievance Procedure. However, resolution is close at hand.
Text Box: TRAINER’S PREMIUM NOT PAID IN FULL
A member/employee was formally training a new hire who had no previous experience or training. The employee did not receive the trainer’s premium (an additional $1.00 an hour above the regular earnings). The U.S.W. Local 9511 advised the full-time employee to lodge an informal complaint. Unable to resolve the issue, a grievance was filed and is currently in step 3 of the Grievance Procedure. However, it appears that Arbitration is inevitable.

                     OFFERED OVER-TIME
A full-time employee was not given the opportunity to work overtime when it was available. Furthermore, the overtime was offered to junior part-time employee. The U.S.W. Local 9511 was informed of this situation. The Union advised the full-time employee to lodge an informal complaint. Unable to resolve the issue, a grievance was filed and is currently in step 3 of the Grievance Procedure. However, resolution is close at hand.

Text Box: OVER-TIME PREMIUM NOT PAID
Several members of Local 9511 did not receive an overtime premium before or after a statutory holiday and whereas the member worked the fifth day. The Employer believes that overtime should only be paid based on hours worked only. The USW Local 9511 having exhausted the Grievance process with no resolution has set an Arbitration date for early March 2008.
