Women of Steel USW Local 9511 is currently in the process of instituting our own Women’s Committee to provide a venue from which women can gain leadership skills, raise issues, and organize to make changes in order to connect with other women building support networks in our workplace. Through examples from our International Parent Union such committees often play a key role in the ongoing struggle to advance women’s equality and rights in the workplace.
Article VII of the Constitution of International Union USW Local Unions Section 13 states:
‘To further our commitment to encourage activism, leadership development and greater understanding of gender issues in our Local Unions with female membership, a Women’s Committee, under the direction of the International Union or its designated representative, shall be established by such Local Unions.’
It is in this light, we encourage as many women to participate in Union activities as we can endorse. Through the Woman’s Committee we hope to establish a means to share our collective knowledge and provide each of us with a method to identify available resources with a sense of community and support for the problems facing today’s USW woman. We also invite the women of Local 9511 to join in the race for elected office in each election year. |
